Online Spoken English Training

English
and the Indian – Languages cannot be learnt in the classroom if the classroom cannot replicate real life situations within its fore-walls , and rightly so, for you would notice that children in India, like children all across the world, learn to speak in their mother tongues before they join school, and then, after joining school, spend a little more than a decade learning languages like English, in the classroom, which they ultimately cannot speak fluently.

Interestingly, the ability to speak in one’s mother tongues comes quickly and naturally to all children as the mother tongue is learnt by living the language. Living a language is basically learning a language through everyday interactions by observing and imitating others in an environment that necessities the use of the language. This is how all kids learn, to begin with, they observe and imitate their parents and family members. However, their attempts to learn a foreign language, in the classroom, yields little results as there is very little scope for observation and imitation in most classroom settings.

At Shiksha we focus on this principle that is at the heart of language learning, that is to engage with learners in an environment that would require the use of the target language (the language a person wants to learn) as much as possible. The training methodology involves initiating students into the communicative process by helping them transition from language reception (listening & reading) to language production (writing & speaking). A simple way of understanding the term communicative process would be this, while learning his or her mother-tongue, a toddler receives information by listening, also known as language reception, and then in due course of time produces information by speaking, another name for language production.

Grammarland

Grammar has a reputation of being dull and dry, but a turn-of-the-century classic, Grammar-Land by M.L. Nesbitt (first published 1878), attempts to make it fun by turning learning the parts of speech into a game

Click on the picture to download one of the most interesting e-books on grammar.
In the imaginary world of Grammar-Land, the parts of speech have been arguing about which of them is most important. They must come before Judge Grammar and explain themselves. The book is written with the “children of Schoolroom-shire” as the intended audience, and as each part of speech comes before the judge, he asks the children for help in understanding the parts of speech.Because I love studying grammar, I think it goes without saying that I loved this book! I found it to be a delightful introduction for kids. The parts of speech have distinct and memorable personalities. I think my favorite was Little Article.Admittedly, the plot is not a fascinating adventure. There is no disguising the fact that this book is teaching something. But, compared to other options, I think sitting and reading about Grammar-Land is an ideal way for my son to first be exposed to the parts of speech. With the worksheets that other homeschool parents have made (here and here), I see Grammar-Land as a delightful beginning grammar “curriculum” for my young son.

Eliminating the Accent

Accent according to Collins: the characteristic mode of pronunciation of a person or group, especially one that betrays social or geographical origin.

Despite the many qualities that the English language embodies, it presents widening diversity in terms of its many  accents. And Kerala in India is no exception to the rule; it has in its accentual fold, amusingly peculiar oddities. Continue reading Eliminating the Accent

Rhetoric

imagesThe forgotten art of speech or writing intended to be effective, forceful and persuasive. Rhetoric essentially should have in it the ethos, the pathos and the logos, first structured that way by Aristotle.

Ethos: The ethical element, and that is the idea that a conflict between the message and the messenger can result in an almost lukewarm or lackadaisical response to the verbal delivery. The idea that the moral integrity of the speaker charms the emotional attitude of the hearer.

The Pathos: Elements in a speech that appeal to the hearers emotional quotient.

The Logos: logos is the thought. Where ingenuity of thought merges with logical coherence both inductive and deductive, critical and constructive.
